Photography Services and Post Production
|
| |
| Bay Area Event Photography provides a wide range of photography services. Our multi-faceted services cover both reactive photojournalism, and pro-active creative photography, typically for on-spec advertising. Reactive photojournalism can best be described as capturing the human experience in a larger context. These images represent World Class photojournalism, as seen in the New York Times, Washington Post, Associated Press, and other national level news press services. Many of the portfolios presented on the home page clearly demonstrate our capability of creating World Class images, capturing the human experience. Typical work includes corporate conventions, conferences, tradeshows, social evenings, and press assignments.
Proactive Creative Photography can best be described as production studio photography. This level of production usually involves creative agencies, set crews, digital assistants, animal trainers, actors, agents, handlers, and of course, the photographer. Studio production can cover any location, depending on the customer's creative requirements, across North America.
The second half our services, the quiet part, is post-production imaging. All client work is put through retouching, whether minimalist adjustments for press, or full-on image retouching for creative and stock photography requirements. This key ingredient brings out the life in every photo we deliver.

| |
|
Every photography service contains two components - on-site photography and post-production image editing. The post-production service is bundled with the level of service purchased, and defined as Tier 3, Tier 2 or Tier 1.
The graph on the right illustrates the amount of time spent per image for each Tier level.
|
|
 |
|
| |
| Tier 3 - Editorial Imaging |
| Imaging is limited to cropping, color, highlights, shadows and contrast adjustments on the photo as a whole. This fits with ethics requirements for press release and editorial use. This imaging is based on industry standards of "darkroom techniques" employed with film processing. These techniques include color correction, shadow and highlight adjustments, contrast, dodging, burning, etc. No content editing is allowed for these images. |
| |
| Tier 2 - Corporate Communications |
| More latitude is given in retouching, from Tier 3, to edit the content within the image. These techniques include object removal, color replacement, skin and facial blemish removal, etc. These images are referred to, as "illustrations" in the press industry. |
| |
| Tier 1 - Stock Photography Imaging |
|
| Tier 1 imaging is the most intense, in terms of graphic editing, and time commitment. This level of imaging is based on imaging rules created by Getty Images, the world's largest stock agency. The time spent editing an image is, at least, one order of magnitude higher than Tier 2 imaging. The time chart, in figure 1, gives you an idea of how much more effort and time it takes to create "Getty Ready" images. |

Usage Pricing of Photography Services
|
| |
| Usage, as it is known in the industry, is broken down into three categories - Editorial, Promotional, and Full Commercial. You will see these pricing models match each type of photography service described below. Editorial usage is part of the Standard Services Pricing. Promotional usage is part of the Premium Services Pricing. Full Commercial is a purchase of Premium Service plus a purchase of an exclusive usage period for unlimited commercial usage. The following three sections describe the levels of service and matching usage. |
| |
| Editorial Usage (Standard Services Pricing) |
| Photography is used for the purposes of press releases, newspapers, internal documentation, and personal use. Other than for press, images are NOT allowed to be displayed or published on the Web, since this constitutes an uncontrolled release of the image. Typical assignments are corporate press programs, daily or weekly newspapers, social evening events, and personal events. |
| |
| Promotional Usage (Premium Services Pricing) |
| Photography for these purposes include the Editorial usage, but also may be used in promotional materials related to the event or event services. Clients typically use these images for a web portfolio or case study of the event, but in a promotional manner. The most common printed form has been the incorporation of images into the next year's program guide and attendee materials. |
| |
| Full Commercial Usage (Premium Services plus Commercial Pricing) |
| Full Commercial Usage is the next step above Promotional Usage. This is where images have either been created strictly for a commercial use, or are published out of the context of the event. An example of unrelated usage would be to use event images for selling baby diapers, cigars, or automobiles. With Commercial Usage, you receive full usage rights to the photos for any and all purposes. The offering of full commercial usage comes in two forms based on time: |
| |
|
1) 2-year exclusive usage. You receive usage for a full two years from the calendar date of the event, at a cost of 0.25 times the quoted rate for Production and Post Production costs found in the contract, "Event Services Quote". |
|
|
|
2) Purchase Pricing - Lifetime exclusive usage. This is effectively a "buyout" of the images created for you. You receive exclusive lifetime usage rights, at a cost of 1.0 times the quoted rate for Production and Post Production costs found in the contract, "Event Services Quote". We retain copyright ownership and limit our usage to portfolio display. |
